Yes, most seasoned dialysis nurses will test positive nasally for the staph bacteria. Please be sure you cover the nose. Many staff and patient's fail to do that.

Anytime you are hooking up a catheter, (or anytime the catheter ends are open) the staffmember AS WELL AS the patinet should be wearing a mask.

Also when you are doing a dressing change at the cath site. :)

I have doubts regarding the need to put a face mask on. Obviously, there is risk for contamination but my expirience says me that there is no difference in morbidity wether a mask is used or not.

Does anybody know any written resourses regarding using the mask.

K DOQI guidelines.. Do a google search... Any open catheter is a great conduit to the central circulatory system.. And that heart muscle is very susceptible..

Also you can never really be sure that the cuff is totally grown in.

I am sure that is the case, so far. But your exprerience may not encompass all foreseeable outcomes. Infection through a central line is a very real possibility. Guidlines are there for a reason, not usually personal preference.

Does your facility have a poilcy and procedure for the use and care of central lines? If so, that would be the first place to look. If not, the website refrenced by the previous poster has the rational for masking of both the patient and nurse.

Thanks for tip. I know what DOQI says about. The problem is DOQI written as recommendations. If I remember properly in DOQI written that a nurse SHOULD put a mask on yet not MUST do so. It means that putting mask on is optional, is not it?

Look up your facilities policies and procedures. Call your infection control manager or nurse educator.

Why risk it? I wouldn't....I always wear a mask, as do my patients.

On the other hand you perform automatically some procedure without any understanding why you do it, only because once your mentor has said you to do so. I frequently meet people who think that blind adherence to the rules proves their professionalism, but it does not. It seems you one of them. I wish you to be more curious and open-minded.

It is a strong arguement. And a fact. I have seen the results of my nasal swabs. I know I carry staph and so does most every long term dialysis nurse.

What happens when you sneeze during catheter manipulation? Can you stop yourself or turn your head.

I'm sure you're aware that stats can be manipulated.. Many people will tell you that wearing a helmet on a motorcycle saves lives. Well, I'd rather be dead than a quad.

Governments thought seat belts would save money but they don't. All those people who don't die in MVA live on and collect social security.

Can I ask you why you don't want to wear a mask???

I am always curious but some things just are. As for looking professional just cuz I follow blindy good judgement and sound protocols ,,,,,well I just can't help it.. Are you saying you are more professional than I because you question every little thing.. Besides when I wear a mask I pretend I am a neurosurgeon..And what other time do I get to stick out my tongue at those "difficult" patients.
