Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Is anyone here applying or have got into the nursing program at City College of San Francisco, all of the community colleges I've been looking at have lottery systems and it's so nerve racking. I'm submitting my application sometime in January 2009 and wondering if anyone knows the odds. Another college I've been looking at is Evergreen in San Jose, their application period in Fall of 2009, and during one of the workshops they mentioned that the odds were close to 50% for those eligible (most of the applications don't meet the minimum requirements), they have a separate lottery for those with a gpa of 3.7 and more and entry is close to guaranteed but unfortunately I'm not at that level. The different requirements at different colleges limits my options, for example De Anza in San jose requires a certain amount of units to be taken at their campus.

I do! I do! dont go EVC...go to CCSF! i just graduated from CCSF on dec 20, 08...feel free to ask for any evaluations.

HI Cubeo,

I am also interested in hearing about your experience at CCSF. What did you most like about the program, the least? How much did the program cost you in total? Would you recommend it over College of San Mateo, SFSU/Canada program or an Accelerated BSN at Northridge? I would really appreciate your input since I haven't met anyone who went to CCSF. I am a current applicant.

Thanks!

There are so many things to talk about, and there is no such thing as "most like" or "least"for me, but i can describe as positive and negative:

Positive:

-Instructors were very organized

-no discrimination

-very knowledgeable

-"some" instructors are flexible with clinical hrs/ class hrs

-fun, easy to talk to

-you get a lot of different hospitals

-float to different units (Intenstive care unit, Cardiac Cath lab, Dialysis, Emergency room, Cardiac Care Unit, Neonatal Intenstive care unit, get to be an elementary school nurse, Interventional Radiology, Respiratory therapy, Psychiatric prison, Operation room with direct observation!!! ah..so many..still more but it would take too much space... ) GREAT EXPERIENCES:yeah:

-Office staffs are extremely!..and i mean Extremely nice, helpful, and willing to help:up:

-ill add more if i remember...

Negative:

-expensive uniforms!

-a lot of work, very stresfful from time to time due to work load, and if u live 50 miles away, it's a pain to wake up as early as 5AM to drive to clinical.:p

-ill add more if i remember...

How much the program cost me?

lets break it down...

-FAFSA paid for my units, and enrollment fees...(if you are low income, u'll get financial aid $$$)

-$20 dollars for parking stickers each semesters (total 4 )

-books cost like approximately $380(buying online) for me on 1st semester, $250 for 2nd, 3rd and 4th i swaped books with classmates

-stethoscope and others medical tools, about $150

-most of my expenses go to gasssssss

-i live with my mom, so my situation is different because i dont have to worry about mortgage, cooking, bills, etc...so im very lucky....so u have to take those into ur calculation..but now i can help her pay everything after i get a job:smokin:

Would you recommend it over College of San Mateo, SFSU/Canada program or an Accelerated BSN at Northridge?

-everybody is different, i am they type that will take 5 hrs to study 1 suject while other might take 2 or 3 hrs..

-i am not smart, but willing to work very hard to achieve the goal...:banghead:

-english is my 2nd language...thus i had many challenges in reading and learing...

-so for me, 2yr program is good for me since i never step in the hospital before, i was insecured and afraid of failing, did bad in anatomy and physiology, but did ok in microbiology:p...

-i didnt do much research about other programs and other schools..but....if you think you are fast learner, smart, endure long hrs of study..go for it....but just remeber ...once u got into the program..there is no going back...because failing will cost u money, time, and self-esteem.

-I will continue my education ofcourse! until getting a Master..cuz im still young and a lot of opportunities out there..and plus u get to make more money:yeah:

-2 of our classmates left the program after 1st semester because they got accepted into Accelerated BSN at SFSU, and they are doing fine now, they going to graduate in May with BSN..das great!

-there are several people in my class have kids, working full time, part time...commute long distances..it all depends on how organize you are, how much effort you willing to put in, and how serious you are in nursing ...

-from what i know..people in 2 yr program, BSN program, accelerate..watever..we all take the same exam, NCLEX, and get pay with the same ammount..

-i lived only 15 minutes away from Evergreen Valley College, and my bro is in 3rd semester now in EVC...it's a very terrible program.....:zzzzz..dont go EVC unless u got no choice.

-aniway..good luck with your applications...and if u get accepted in so CCSF...let me know..and i wil show u now to survive 2 years ... and sorry about my typo....too lz to fix it...wutever..if u dont understand ..ask me..lol:down:

Cubeo,

I'm a current applicant at ccsf for Fall '09/Spring '10. I was wondering how many times you applied before getting accepted (or chosen by the lottery)? Also, would you say the clinical are all within the san francisco area? I'm just curious as to how far students have to drive to clinicals. Thanks for all your helpful info!

hi cubeo,

can you tell me more about evc nursing? because i am an ESL student, too, and it takes me almost twice as much as other students spend to study, but i'm willing to learn hard. Can you tell me more and more information about evc nursing because i have a choice between evc and csueb. Your information will be helpful for me to have an accurate decision. Any info will be great, thank in advance.

Hello everyone,

I was accepted into the upcoming spring semester at CCSF and just received my packet...Which makes me even more nervous. I will be commuting from the central valley to Dublin and than take Bart to Daly City, which works out good for me because my father commutes to the bay area M-F already (saves me $$).

Cubeo, do you have any suggestions for the first semester? I've been told by everyone 1st semester is the toughest (because programs try to weed out those who can't make the cut), but once you get through the 1st semester you should do ok...Any study tips, other books that helped???? Did you work while in the program??

I was also wondering if the hospitals we do clinicals at have nurse externs during the summer??? My local community colleges offer a limited number of nursing students jobs in the summer time to gain experience. (It's similar to CNA work, but if they like you they tend to want to hire you upon graduation/passing nclex)

hmmmm...I'm excited, yet nervous at the same time..so anyone with tips for a 1st semester nursing student would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

Hello Japorro13,

Yes, 1st semester is the toughest...no i did not work while i was in the program...but many of my classmates were either working or taking care of their kids while in nursing program....so it's up to each individual...pay attention to the instructors during lecture..whatever they said will be on exam..ect... notes ...fundamental book of nursing, and medsurg book are the important ones...externs? i dont know u will have to find out from the hospitals =) and i suggest you use ur summer enjoy with family and review ur 1st semester..study for 2nd semester ..ur goal is to pass 1st semester first..then worry other later..if u can get into any hospital system be4 u graduate..i.e SFGH..great..u might have a guarantee job after you grad. know your connection is very important..know who hire people will help u secure a job after u grad..good luck to you..any other question..feel free to ask..and im sorry for the late respond =)

For those who got in CSUSF, what is your GPA and TEAS? I just want to know where I am. I am very interested to get into the program there. I had GPS 3.95, and TEAS 82, and speak two languages. Thank you!
