Cath Lab Job

Nurses General Nursing

I am a tele/medsurg nurse with 3 years experience. I have been offered a position in the cath lab at the hospital i am currently working in. I am very interested in advancing my career. They want me to sign a two and 1/2 year contract, and if i do not stay i must repay 6,000 dollars. I will also be inserting picc lines which I just got certified to do. I am wondering if a contract like this is normal? I will be getting great experience, but I am nervous about such a long contract. It is a very small lab that is only diagnostic. Thank you for your help.

I can't help you with the going rate in terms of contract for your services. I can tell you that working in the Cath Lab opened many doors for me down the road. I loved working and scrubbing in the lab. I learned so much about all sorts of things. From the usual to the congenital dx's.

If you like that kind of work ( which it seems you do) I'd investigate it further. Check out the average length of stay per employee. Check on references. What about call? See if this new opportunity fits into your life now.

I wish you the best.

Thank you. I am assuming that you worked in a cath lab at one point. Did you need the critical care course? Some people have been telling me without the hospital offering me the critcal care course the contract is not worth it. I was trying to get the course included in my contract, but was told if that is what I want then ICU is a better place for me.

Yes I worked in a cath lab for 4 years. I don't get the bolgney about having the critical care course included in your contract. Most nurses in the cath lab have had critical care experience. I think it might depend on how badly they are in need to fill the position.

On the other hand, If you truly want the job, why not take the course anyway. It would freshen up skils, build confidence, and keep you current. Same with ACLS training. I can't even put a value on ACLS and working in the lab.

I'm just out of the loop with contracts, so I really am in no position to advise you there. But for myself, if I wanted a job bad enough I usually seek further education in the field on my own. I like to do what I do and to do it well!!!

Good Luck
