Case study - me.

Published

I had minor surgery today. I have/had a cracked tooth and went to the dentist to have it pulled. I want an implant to replace it eventually, but that will take a couple of months.

At any rate, "why did this happen".

I have high blood pressure, and take meds (calcium blockers, and ARBs mostly) and my BP was up before I went in for surgery. I took a pill, and informed the dentist I had done so before I was put under.

This is not the first tooth replacement/implant I have had. The first time around I was awake and the dentist had to give me a ton of shots to numb me up so he could get the job done. That was not a pleasant experience so I decided to go under this time. At any rate after I fell asleep I woke up at least once in the middle of the procedure. I remember seeing the dentist and the nurse looking at me from about 1 foot away, and me trying to say "how'd it go?". (I thought it was over)

After it really was over I don't remember much. I was lucid, but kind of out of it, I was answering questions, but now just 12 hours later I can barely remember it. On the ride home I had a conversation with my wife I can not remember for the life of me.

What is interesting to me is that I have fought with high BP for years. When they first hooked me up to measure my BP I was at 142. After I went under it dropped to 100. They told me (and my wife later reminded me) that they saw me waking up but were afraid to give me more medication because my BP was so low.

I went home and slept it off and feel better now, other than having a tooth pulled. I have been blessed that I have not had to be put under much in my life, but waking up in the middle of a surgery (albeit minor) concerns me.
