Carrington College Jan' 19, +Kaplan Tips

Hey All! I am applying to start Carrington's RN program in January 2019 and I just took my Kaplan exam last night. I spent months scouring the internet looking for study tips and came up pretty short so I wanted to share mine here to hopefully help someone else out. Firstly I studied out of the Hesi, Kaplan, and McGraw Hill nursing entry exam review books (all purchased on amazon). I also studied off of Khan Academy's SAT prep for reading, writing, and to brush up on grammar. I scored 100% in reading, 96% in math, and 81% in writing. If you've already taken the exam I would love to compare scores, especially if you've applied before! I'm pretty happy with my scores but I have no frame of reference for it they are good enough to get in.

Math: There is a calculator available to you for every question. Most of the questions are working with fractions and decimals and are VERY easy. There were a few very simple "solve for x" equations and a few simple word problems as well. The HESI and Kaplan review book's math section are significantly more difficult than what you will encounter on the actual exam. The McGraw hill is very similar in difficulty but touches on things I found you really didn't need for the exam, like geometry.

Reading: The reading comprehension section was WAY easier than the reading comprehension sections of the Khan SAT prep, Kaplan, and Hesi books. The passages were comparable to those of the McGraw hill book, but honestly I would say a smidge easier. I would not stress about this section, it was very straightforward.

Writing: This section was definitely the hardest. You are given a passage to read and then given a series of questions about how to alter the passage. Some questions ask you to pick the best spot to add a sentence, to pick out a sentence to delete because it is repetitive, to identify which sentence is missing a verb etc. The most difficult part about this section was that I often felt that multiple answers were correct. None of the review books were helpful for this section but the Khan Academy website was. Their SAT writing review section had the most similar questions to the actual exam and going through their grammar review page was extremely helpful in brushing up on things like subject-verb agreement, semicolon usage, affect vs. effect etc.

I know this is long but I hope it is helpful to someone! If anyone has any questions for me I am happy to answer them! Again if anyone else has taken the exam/applied to carrington before I would love to chat with you too to get a better a sense of where my scores are standing!

Hi! I thought it was over with lol... I got a 250 and still haven’t gotten a call back after leaving emails and voicemails. I registered for classes just to keep going but maybe I will get a call still. I just basically thought a denial letter would come in the mail! Let me know if you get a call!

I will for sure keep you posted. You do the same. The best times I got a hold of Pam was at like 5:30-6:00 pm every time I have talked to her. I would call and make sure your profile is complete because she said that a lot of profiles were not complete. Also I asked and she said they do not send out denial letters or emails.

I would try to call traci or ray lean that usually always gets me through.

What profile are you referring to?

The background check, drug screen, immunizations, and official transcripts if you have them.

@Kbay Have you heard anything?

I haven’t! I called but got a voicemail again so I left another message (I think it was a week and a half ago? Whenever we all wrote last) Have you heard anything? For me I am starting classes and am registered. It’s too late for me uproot and leave so I’m just gonna keep going. I honestly can’t wait and I don’t know that I feel good about it since I have never gotten any kind of feedback/answer is a bit unnerving. Even an emailed response. I got a 254 on my test unless they told me the wrong score and I got way lower. And have left at least 15 voicemails and sent 3 emails. I know the program works as I know a few nurses that have gone There. Maybe it just was the crazy IT thing but I can’t get ahold of anyone ever. I just go to voicemail

@Kbay No I haven’t. I was going to give it until the end of next week and give her a call if I haven’t heard. I most of the time got a VM but when I did get ahold of her it was at 6pm at night. Your score is close to mine so your in the same boat as me. I will be traveling back and forth to Reno from Sacramento. But I have family to stay with up in Reno thankfully. If I hear anything I’ll let you know.

Ya I am in Sacramento also- I’m going to do another semester and try to apply to some schools out here in February after I finish a couple more prereq classes. I am basically done but Yuba requires a few that others don’t.

@Kbay What schools are you going to apply to?? The only other one I’m looking at right now is Simpson University in Redding. I did my undergrad at William Jessup university so I have all the pre reqs they require.

So crazy! I’m at Jessup now completing my last 2 for Simpson and I’m also online with Yuba for Pathophysiology and Pharm- I work with a ton of nurses that went to yuba and it’s not too expensive to go through them into their schools for Bach degree-

I am going to apply to Simpson for Fall of 2020 because spring will overlap my classes this semester!

Specializes in LVN pediatrics.

Hi! So i am Applying to carrying colleges RN as well! I just got off the phone with Pam and she said i scored In the 96th percentile without science and 92 percentile with science. They haven’t called to tell me I was accepted or not tho. Any advise? Is 96 and 92 percentile good?? Thank you!!
