Career path to a RN....

I am currently employed in a mid level management position in the transportation industry. I am going to start my nursing prereqs this fall and am looking at getting into a nursing program fall of 2006. My plan is this, complete my prereqs and finish up my BS in business admin/finance (I only have a couple classes left). Once I start my nursing classes I wanted to quit my current job (I could not keep it any way due to travel requirements) and was thinking about becoming a CNA to get some practical experience (I have done volunteer work in the past). I know I will take a big pay cut but I am not married and do not have any children so I could swing it. Do many places offer tuition reimbursment for CNA's?? Also, would this be my best course of employment to pursue during my nursing courses?? I have no problem starting at the CNA position. I think starting at the CNA position would also give me a good perspective. Thoughts??

Yes, you will find facilities willing to reimburse for tuition as a CNA. Having the experience with add to your comfort in patient care. I am sure you realize how labor intensive CNA work is; you sound like you could handle it (after reading your biography).

Another plus with CNA work is working out a schedule with your employer to coordinate with school.

Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing. ;)

Thanks for the advice!

I am in a BSN program right now and there are number of students that are working as CNA's...They have gained experience with not only basic nursing functions (taking vitals, knowing if someone is in distress, etc..) but learned how to interact with patients...which is not easy. Many of the students are finding jobs in the specialty area they are currently working in becuase they have already gotten "a foot in the door". If you can swing the time commitment to work during school...go for it!!
