Need some tips on cardiovascular nursing

Specialties Cardiac

Published

Hi there,

I am graduating from nursing school in May and this week I am interviewing on a cardio vascular surgical floor. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for me that might help me SHINE during my interview. I really want to work on this floor since I've heard they offer a great new grad experience. The floor is mainly comprised of cardiac and vascular surgeries...does anyone out there work on a floor similar to this? Thank you ahead of time for all your help :)

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

It will be a very busy floor, fast paced and anything can and will happen. Good criticial thinking skills will be needed.

Good Luck it is my favorite type of floor.

Specializes in Cardiac Telemetry/PCU, SNF.

We hardly do any vascular surgery,we're mostly cardiac. I think things to bring in is critical thinking skills, openness to learning (I had a ton of extra education to complete after I was hired, rhythm interp, ACLS, pacer basics/essentials, 12 Leads etc.) and the willingness to learn. It is my favorite kind of nursing that I have encountered yet. And yes, it is fast-paced...but not always. It's just that if something goes south, it can go quick, so the ability to roll and adapt to changing situations is a plus.

Good Luck!

Tom

Hmmmmm, how did you interview go?

I am a new grad too and interviewed for a cardiac/vascular floor as well and accepted the position. I am very excited because they do offer a great grad program and they will teach you alot. These type of floors, so I heard, is a great place for a new grad to learn alot, gain those valuable assessment skills and time mgt and more importantly to me, offers good ground for moving to critical care. I cannot wait to start but I have to pass my boards first, taking them in 2 weeks.

Good luck!
