Car seat test

Published

How much teaching are you allowed to do regarding car seats in your unit? For me, we put the baby in it however the parents bring it to us and aren't allowed to say anything to them except, "read the manual." (Which of course none of them do.) I feel like we are letting these babies be completely unsafe and it kills me!

Do any of your units provide car seat education to staff to allow for parent teaching? I would love to have a car seat tech on staff! (Totally dreaming...)

We do quite a bit of teaching about car seat and car seat safety. We are all trained as staff on the proper fit and how to educate parents. The parents are responsible for placing their baby in the seat an demonstrating the proper fit to the baby. We do full car seat inspections, although we cannot tell a parent they cannot use the seat they provide. We educate about expiration dates and occasionally will provide the family with a new seat if the one they bring is deemed unsafe, or if they just do not bring one in. We also have a video for them to watch as well as a handout and a list of car seat fitting stations. We cannot help them install it into their car due to hospital liability.
