Car insurance fraud - how will this affect me?

Published

Hello! I hope I’m posting this in the right area. I’m supposed to start my program in August of this year and I’m not sure if it’s even worth it at this point. My roommate got into an accident with my car. He was insured under my policy. After he texted me about it, I went to file a claim and saw my policy was inactive. I immediately called the carrier and was told if I made a payment there would be no lapse in coverage. Well apparently, the rep also explained about rewriting the policy and that made the coverage at the time of the accident invalid. So basically I tried to claim an accident on a policy that wasn’t valid. An investigator from the fraud department and deterrence for my state came to my home to speak to me. She said the criminal department passed up on charges but this is now a civil case and I’ll have to pay up to $5k in fees. I’m terrified that this will ruin my life. This is 100% my fault for not making sure my insurance was paid up to date and not making sure I understood the rep 100%. She said I’ll yet paperwork in a month outlining the fees I’ll need to pay. She said when that comes if I pay the fees, they’ll close the case. Anyone deal with something like this or know someone that’s dealt with something like this? I don’t want to lose my entire future over a mistake.
