Candian Nurse writting NCLEX

Published

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this site, I'm a 4th year Nursing student from Canada, and am planning on writting the NCLEX after I graduate this May. I have learned alot from reading all the different threads on here .. they are very helpful ..but and wondering if any of you Canadians out there that have written it has any tips or pointers on the difference bewteen the Canadian and American tests (I'm writting both in June/July).

Any help would be great .. I'm a soo scared of this test!!!

As different as night and day. One focuses on patho-phys, etc., like the old US exams, and the NCLEX is completely computerized and is what they call a CAT test. It focuses more on priority type questions, who would you see or what you do first.

Pay very close attention to the medications, lab values, as well as the different phrases that we use, medically related.

Simple example, our blood sugar testing has a completely different set of values that it uses, not even similar to what you do in Canada.

Thanks for the reply.... that scares me even more that I'm going to have to re-learn a lot of things to the American values ect lol... I plan on getting some studying tools, some that have been mentioned alot in these threads (which do you think is best and how $ are they??). I just want to make sure that I pass the 1st time, as I have to travel about 6 hours to just write the test. I was hoping that studying and writting my canadian test before the NCLEX will be a good pre-study time.. lol.. i guess not

Thanks again

They require two different study techniques. Get done with your Canadian boards and then concentrate on the NCLEX, or vice versa. Do not try to review both at the same time, it will be like learning two foreign languages at the same time. Adn only get you more confused.

Get on Suzanne's list and purchase a Saunder's book.

Suzanne has the best advice.

On a personal note. I'm a Canadian who has never written the NCLEX been practising in the US since 88. Planning on taking the exam either this month or next.

Also considering option of going back to Canada. I am focusing my search on Toronto, AB and YT.
