I said to a friend I was a member here and they asked me to ask a question for them.

They are a qualified Nurse in the UK and have had the cgfns report done and sent to the BON in NJ and have permission to sit nclex but not sat it yet. There husband has just been offered a job in Canada and she is wondering if it is possible to be a RN in Canada and what the process is?

Any help would be much appreciated.

It depends on where in Canada. Just like the US where each state has their own requirements, so it is in Canada where each province has their own requirements. Also they have a similar process with their national exam. Once you write the exam in Canada you never have to take it again even if you go to another province later. But the exam is only offered 3 times a year and you don't get your results very quickly. But you can get a temporary licence and start working prior to having your results but there is a few associated with getting the temporary licence. The test is still a paper pencil test that is an 8 hour long test. In Ontario you have to get your BSN before registration as an RN. Each province typically has a college of nursing as a opposed to a state board of nursing. (ie) For British Columbia it is the College of Registered Nurses of B.C. and the websites have all the information you need.

The website in B.C. is:

http://www.crnbc.ca/

I am originally from B.C. so that is what I am familiar with and the information I have quoted is what I have learned from B.C. However, the information is easy to obtain on the internet with a simple search.

I am interested in getting my licence in B.C. as a back up if I ever return to Canada but am currently working in the US and have not pursued it yet. I did have my education assessed which took about 6 months and have been authorized to take the exam but have not made it back to Canada yet to take it. In order to be registered there they require a Canadian employer as a reference since I was educated in the US and you have to do a minimum of 250 hours with a Canadian employer before being fully registered. So that I can't do right now but it is nice to know the process. Not sure how it compares to other provinces though. I am sure it is easy enough to find out though.

Good Luck!

check out the Canadian forum, there is a thread there with links to various provinces and I am sure it tells you what you need to do
