Canadian looking to work in Michigan

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hi,

My name is Somer, im a 25year old RPN student. Our class had 2 nurses come to speak to us today (one RN, one RPN) and the RN spoke a lot about working in the USA, and if we were going to try to write the test, right after we are done school is the time to do it. (still in the exam writing, studying frame of mind). So if anyone could tell me any tips, of general areas i might have to contact. That would be great.

Im not to sure if i would contact a hospital, or a school , or does Michigan have a "college of nurses"?

Im just looking to keep my job options open, since i live so close to the states.

Thank you

SOmer

You would need to contact the Michigan Board of Nursing, but you will need a full set of transcripts to be submitted before you can start the paperwork. Which means waiting until you have finished your program. You will also need to obtain a Visa Screen Certificate, same as any other "foreign" nurse coming into the US. The one thing that you have in your favor is that as a graduate of a Canadian program, you will not have to write the CGFNS exam, or do the English exams.

Please check out the International forum, there are stickies at the top of the page that will give you all of the info that you need, or even the sticky at the top of the Canadian forum.

You can expect about 6 to 7 months at the minimum before you will have the appropriate documents so that you can work in the US. A license alone will not let you, you will need to obtain a TN Visa to be able to work.

I am an original MI grad.:)

Please diregard what I wrote above. As an RPN, you will be unable to get a work visa for the US. You must have an RN license to qualify for this. With the RN, you will also qualify for the TN Visa.

But again, only RNs can get work visas for the US. Sorry.
