Canadian looking at ER new grad in CA

Published

I've been in contact with a Canadian recruiter about the prospects of working in CA in a new grad ER position. I graded with my BScN in 2015. I haven't worked in ER, but have been an EMT for 12 years. I don't know a whole lot about the questions I should be asking, I'm hoping I can get some help with that here :)

Have you been able to get a RN license in CA?

If you do not have a social security the California BON will not issue you a license

I would suggest researching for getting initial license in California. They will not process your application unless you have a social security number.

Im Canadian myself currently in WA state as an ER nurse. You will have to apply for a board that do not require SSN, passed NCLEX, get a visa screen from CGFNS, apply for a job, get an offer letter, apply for TN status at the border, apply for SSN. While working in a different state you can then start applying for your California license. Endorsement in California takes several weeks to months and depending on your transcripts they may or may not require you to go back to school. I would suggest getting some experience in Canada while you process your paper work because it will take time. No way around this. Good luck and let me know if I can be of help.
