UBC Nursing - Sep. 2012

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hello Everyone!

I am considering applying to UBC Nursing for the September 2012 intake... but I'm not quite sure if I'm eligible to apply...

My primary concern is my post-secondary credits... everyone seems to have already completed a Bachelor's before applying? As of now, I have 40+ credits... by the end of June 2010 I'll have 50+ credits (which is the deadline for all transcripts), but they're a combination of first-year science, calculus and language courses with only a couple of second year o-chem... would that be ok?

I am currently a Langara student, but I have studied at SFU before until my relocation.

I've also read on the website that the average age of applicants were 21-47 (please don't quote me on this, I can't remember the exact range)... and I'm now 18 (will soon turn 19 though), but I have the requirements it's just that I'm unsure if it's alright that my 50+ credits are mostly first-year...

My GPA now is 3.3 and hoping to boost it up after this semester...

I volunteer regularly at a senior home and am a certified lifeguard and swimming instructor, worked part-time at Timmys until relocation and now have a part-time job at a local grocery store... I just hope age isn't that big of a deal because I know what I want and I'm working for it...

Should I apply at all...

(Very Worried. HELP Please!!!)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

btw,

i just wanted to comment that coming from a family of rns doesn't guarantee a natural right to become a nurse.. maybe just some connections along the path. i come from a similar background and you have no idea how much it annoys people when we say things like that. try not to tell peers these things, in case one day you come in contact with someone who looks at you funny for saying that (they will tell you they have been around grocery stores since age 5, does that mean they can become a grocery store manager?). it doesn't feel nice at all.

also, you mentioned having done x hours of volunteer.. for someone who is passionate about helping people, should the specific number of hours be something important to mention?

as an interviewer, you will not have done an impressive job persuading me of your passion just by telling me you have 'volunteered x hours and come from a family of rns'. there is more to a passion than the credentials. right?

that being said, after all you are just empathizing with those who didn't get an interview offer yet, and that is understandable.

i just wanted to mention that at one point i wanted to focus my story on the fact that i grew up roaming the hospitals surrounded by health professionals and am really close at heart with the job. i now realize that saying that in itself shows a lack of development and is in ways naive. i should probably instead be focusing on what specifically excites me about nursing and what i would like to specialize in. if you feel it is important to your identity, add at the very end that you founded your interest in nursing because of your background. i just don't think mentioning it right off the bat shows development.. and that is something they look for.

lolo55,

i know someone who is looking to use it as an experience. just thinking about this critically, this person could tell you that the school only offers x number of interviews, and the person with the x+1 standing technically isn't 'deserving' in the sense that they haven't made the cut.. what this someone does with the interview they got is up to them. they earned it.

i know it's unfair, but hey, it's benefitting those who already got an interview [and do intend to go into ubc]. it's keeping extra competition out and increasing their chances of moving out of the waitlist.

"as an interviewer, you will not have done an impressive job persuading me of your passion just by telling me you have 'volunteered x hours and come from a family of rns'."

i am terribly sorry you have interpreted my words to express my experience as arrogance. i was only trying to tell teeheeuhoh

that i have seen a lot of unhappy medical professionals first hand, and have worked along side my family in the field. it was not meant in a way to boast. i am not exactly sure why you would interpret that my words were meant to say that "i have a right to become nurse" as this was the intent of my words. you should not make such fast judgements on my desire to go into this career based on a few sentences, especially considering that you have never even met me. nor am i going to explain to you how much i love this profession, as this has all been stated to the selection commitee in my supplemental application. i have an honest and loving desire to care for people, hence why i have been volunteering for so long. i was simply trying to explain that in the amount of experience i have in the field, i have seen many unhappy people, and that from my experience, i genuinely want teeheeuhoh to think about his/her decision and end up happy with whatever he/she chooses.

the statement you made about not being impressed by my volunteer experience as an interviewer was extremely hurtful. i am not sure why you felt the need to attack me with such words on a forum where we are supposed to be encouraging one another.

my message was in no way meant to be boastful or rude to

teeheeuhoh. i was, as you stated, trying to empathize with the individuals who are still awaiting their invitations.

to the rest of you still waiting, all the very best. i can't possibly imagine how stressed out you must all be, but hang in there! you have put in the effort and want this with all your hearts! know that we are crossing our fingers for you!

Did anyone get any invitations today? None for me, yet.

Haha. This thread is turning hateful, but their points are valid. I personally wouldn't mind getting rejected because someone took an interview spot and didn't intend to get into the program. It just means I need to find ways to improve myself.

Like the person above stated, this may backup plan, and its not like they didn't also go through the application procedure you did. Last time I checked, most people don't waste 100+ dollars just to screw other people over.

I laughed out loud at the grocery store comment. I too find it strange that people magically have aspirations to become doctors, or garbage men etc when they were 5 years old..I love hospitals and I see interesting things happen there. Heck, just yesterday I saw someone die. Was that the interesting part? No. The interesting part was what the man nurse did before that. He gave the dude chest compressions for a good 10 minutes. It was an up an down battle; that sadly he lost. But the idea that I could have the ability to save someone from death is pretty awesome if you ask me.

My reasoning for wanting to be a nurse is kind of stupid, but does that mean I'll be a bad nurse?

Regarding those people who go to interviews knowing they'll decline. Maybe they have other reasons. Perhaps they want stressful interview practicen or they might want to slay a giant.I applied to Pharmacy school at UBC last year, made it to the interview and got decline after that. I was crushed, I spent close to 3 years getting the prereqs done perfectly because I had to boost up my 1.7 GPA that I managed to accumulate 2 years before that up to standard and work at the same time.

After that I decided I needed a backup plan so I chose nursing as well. After awhile I realised that nursing was probably more rewarding in the long run in terms of patient interaction. I still applied to pharmacy so I could, like the angry poster above stated, "boost my self esteem". I spent a good 3 years trying to get in so quitting now is something I will regret later on.

Sorry for making this so long, and thanks for buying my biography :D, all proceeds go to charity. ;).

Did anyone manage to confirm if it's 180 or 200 people being interviewed?

Also I was looking at the schedule thing that UBC put up. I don't really get it, does that mean we get a small break (2 weeksish) between every term?? Or do we have exams during that time?

teeheeuhoh, you don't have to defend yourself to anyone. Your decision is yours to make and you never owed us an explanation. However, you expressed your feelings to the entire board, so naturally, it is to be expected that people are going to express their feelings right back.

I think that you were simply expressing your concerns and that you meant no harm by it, but I also think that before you typed your message you may have failed to consider how your message may come across to others who still have not received an interview. Empathetic girl pointed this out to you, and I completely agreed with her opinion and was in fact trying to say it in a less direct way in my earlier post before hers. You stated that you were unsure of your decision (which is entirely fine) but continued to say that you didn't spend any time on your supplemental application and that your GPA is not particularly high (according to you) and you have no idea why you even got an interview. Try reading that from a perspective of someone who didn't receive an interview, who spent days on their application and also have a higher than average GPA. I think in doing so, you might see why you are getting the reactions that you are. I am not trying to make you feel bad or expecting you to explain yourself, I am simply just pointing out the root of why you are getting certain reactions. With that said, you don't owe ANY of us any explanations and you don't have to defend your decision. It's your decision to make.

duqling, Perhaps you are personally friends with teeheeuhoh, but I don't think it is fair that you took it to a whole other level and decided to personally attack empathetic girl. If you read her post objectively, you would see that empathetic girl was not trying to attack her at all. You may not have meant it that way, but it definitely came across that way.

In anyyyyyy case. Good luck to all who received interviews. Best of luck to those still expecting to hear news. My heart is with you.

My heart is with you.

I will fuel my wait with a snack :D Thank you

haha. 6 interviews in 2 hours makes for good "Stressful interview practice" for sure.

I will fuel my wait with a snack :D Thank you

Darn zombie trend :p!!

Metaphorically speaking... my heart is with.

p.s... Dear Janfr: Sorry Jan... Was going to delete this message and multi-quote reply but realized I can't delete posts...

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

OK guys settle down and stop getting at each other, yes it is stressful waiting but no need to take it out on each other.

teeheeuhoh- at the information session that i attended they stated that 200 people would be interviewed, 120 people would be accepted.

they did not talk about the break between semesters- maybe someone going through the program now will be able to let you know. there is a one month break during the summer, though!

[...] at the information session that i attended they stated that 200 people would be interviewed, 120 people would be accepted. [...]

thank you for sharing this. i wasn't able to get to any information sessions (i don't live in bc), so i was wondering what tidbits i missed.

I still haven't gotten an email yet :( ...

It kind of sucks to know that I have to wait for others to possibly drop their offer in order to get an interview. Means my gpa/supplemental app isn't good enough to get first priority..

Anyways. Hopefully those that are still waiting for the email will get it soon!
