Can you work in an doctors office as an RN without prior hospital experience?

Published

Currently I'm in school to become a Medical Assistant and I'm toward the end of my program. Lately I've been thinking of going back to become an RN, but The thing is I don't want to work in a hospital. I went for MA just because they don't work in hospitals. What should I do?

There are many non-hospital jobs out there for RNs, like clinics and doctor's offices. I worked for a mental health support program and had regular office hours, weekends off, own office and it paid well considering the very low stress level.

I think its possible. I was lucky, I was already working at the doctors office as an LPN while doing my LPN to RN bridge program. They really liked me and didnt want to see me go, so after I graduated and passed NCLEX, I told them I was not interested in working at a hospital because I didnt want to work nights, holidays, and weekends. And they offered me the Nurse supervisor position to stay (my current nursing supervisor is an LPN and worked part time and she didnt want to do it anymore) So I figured why not, I have to practice managing employees, and delegating anyway as a RN, why not start here. Its a really small clinic I only supervise, 1 new RN, and 2 experienced LPNs. I will see where it takes me, who knows where Ill end up. I just know I dont like working nights, Holidays, and weekends.

Thanks for your comments. Every time i look through job posting for my area Dr. offices are looking for hospital expirence. I might try getting on as an MA first then. going back for RN.

I did for 10 plus years, but these days there are a lot fewer office jobs for RN's. So just realize that it may or may not be an option when you graduate.

Unfortunately many doctors' offices prefer LVNs or MAs because they are usually cheaper to hire than a RN. It is possible, though it may be harder to find such a position.
