Can you be stuck in OB/GYN if you choose to do it right our of school?

I am a new RN, I love doing mother/baby nursing and have accepted a position on a pp unit. My concern is that I will lose the med/surg skill and become too specialized to venture into other areas of nursing later? I wish I had a fairy godmother who could help me decide a meaningful career path that is fun and challenging. So instead, I call to my fellow RN's on this board for advice. What experiences have you had with regards to changing gears from one area to another?

Specializes in Surgical.

No experience in changing fields personally but have worked with others who have done it. It is definately possible. Just remember when you change specialties (if you decide) to do your research. Nothing irks me more to orient someone who for example only has long term care experience to our surgical floor and find out that they expect me to teach it all. I think someone switching fields should expect to crack open some books and refresh themselves some. This may mean refreshing yourself on lab values, procedures, etc. If you decide to switch and take some accountablility in your learning you will do fine.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

No, you will be able to still go to other areas, if you choose.

Specializes in ER, Tele, L&D. ICU.

Luckily, with Mother/Baby you have CaseRoom as the next step *up*, so to speak. So if you do mother/babe for a while and get too *comfortable* you can always move to L&D or NICU and still be in the realm of Women's Health that you like. LDRP's are a great way to experience the best of both worlds. Good luck to you.
