I totally empathize with the stress this puts you in, aside from nursing school itself. I had my first son one week before my program started. I would bring a pump to school and nurse next to the practice mannequins. I had my second son one week before my last semester, too. What kept me going was the thought that I did not want to finish my schooling while my kids were in school too. They were so small when I graduated that they dont remember all the sacrifices i made then and still dont now. Think of how many more sacrifices you'll have to make down the road without an education, which means less time pursuing your dreams and more time feeding the kids, nursing school included. you never know what obstacles your going to face even one year from now. i cant even begin to count how many time Ive heard colleagues say how fast the time goes and how they wish they didnt let life or kids get in the way. good luck and take care.

I, too, have that feeling of not knowing what is going to make me the happiest. I was just about to sign a contract when I realized that I did not want that big of a commitment out of school. It was my dream job, however, the terms were that I do nights only. There was nooo way I can swing that with two babies at home (2 and 6 mos) and a husband going through nursing school too! So now I am back to the drawing board to seek something more fitting for my life. It was the toughest decision EVER! all my supporters basically say the same things as your previous threads, you have you do what is going to make you the happiest. Being a nurse today means havng options, it is finding the right option so you and your patients benefit. Good luck!

Hi, I am a new RN grad and I've never really decided what area I would like to work in. I am afraid that if I specialize and do OB/GYN nursing, I am going to lose med/surg skill that I want to have also. I wish I had a fairy godmother who could wave her wand and help me make a decision. Ultimately it is up to me, but I wonder if it is possible to specialize and still do med/surg too. anyone know?

I am a new RN, I love doing mother/baby nursing and have accepted a position on a pp unit. My concern is that I will lose the med/surg skill and become too specialized to venture into other areas of nursing later? I wish I had a fairy godmother who could help me decide a meaningful career path that is fun and challenging. So instead, I call to my fellow RN's on this board for advice. What experiences have you had with regards to changing gears from one area to another?
