Nurses New Nurse

hello can anyone help me please---

I am a new nurse and I just recently got a job at a convalescent hospital and there has been a rumor that the state board might be coming to our facility for inspection. I have asked around and most of the other nurses have not experience being a round with a state board examiner since most of us are new nurses. My concern is that what are the expectations and what are the things i should be aware of? if anyone has ever experience this please do respond to this thread.

I kindly appreciate your response and considerations thank you.

I can't answer your question directly, as I just started orientation as a new grad 3 days ago and have never been a part of an inspection or site visit. :uhoh3:

But, does your organization have a regulatory affairs department (or person) whose role is to oversee that the hospital is operating up to the standards of the Joint Commission, Health Department, etc? If so, that may be a good place to start to get some information.

They will be going thru charts and looking for deficiencies in the charting for one thing.

Remember that if it is not charted, it is not considered as being done. Insulin and other high alert drugs must have two signatures.

Assessments must be completed appropriately and as required by your state Board of Nursing on each and every patient at the appropriate times.

Administration of medication times will be checked. Reason must be listed as to why a medication was held. Abnoraml labs, how are they reported to the physician or the provider for that patient?

All staff can legally work there and have the legal license for the job that they are doing.

These are just a few of the things that come to my mind right away, your facility should have a liason person that is in charge of these visits and can provide you with specific information for your facility as well as what the state requirements are for your facility.

It is really not as bad as you think if things are properly done in the first place.

i have not been around the state board of nursing except when i was in my last semester clinical and they came to that hospital. all i can say is that i hope you know the policies and what the hospital expects you to be doing. they all freaked out about having pops and food at the nursing station. they had to have the drug carts locked and the mars and charts in the right place. they can pull you aside at any time and ask you questions, such as dealing with precautions, what would you do in this sort of situation and what not. i know it is stressful but i work midnights and i wouldnt realy have to deal too much with it anyway. hope it all goes well, elaine
