Can a shy person become a good nurse?

Published

Hi to all,

It was suggested to me that I was not assertive enough to make it through nursing school.

I have not started NS yet, but will be applying to start Fall '10.

I feel like I have the smarts to make it, and it is my life-long dream ( 46 years old-looong dream). lol

I am not terribly shy, just some-what quiet. My question is , do you have to be "assertive" to be able to handle NS?

I am a bit shy too but what I found helps is to tell yourself "get over it. Everyone makes mistakes. Just do it" - if you're talking about procedures, etc. If we're talking about people, just keep thinking that they don't know you so whatever they may think of you does not matter.

I am going to sign up for the nursing club. That should help a lot.

^_^;; That way I can meet people who wants to become a nurse and make friends.

The worst that could happen is that you'll receive plenty of tough love. Clinical instructors will push you to your limits to try to break you out of your shell. First year of nursing school I was sent home because I wasn't assertive enough. The teacher had a long talk with me about how she wasn't sure I'd make it through nursing school being so quiet. Proved that woman wrong in the end because I graduated back in May and just passed the NCLEX a few days ago. She did that to push me in the right direction. You won't get babied in school if you're shy. My final nursing instructor claims I'm going to be eaten by nursing barracudas or get taken advantage of because I'm not tough enough... Lovely of her to think that.
