Can an RN travel overseas with a Pt. with a US license?

Published

Just wondering: If an RN is requested to travel with a patient...care for the patient ...private duty. Does she need to get a license in the country they are traveling to?

Thanks!

Not that I know of. I once worked for a client who took his nurses to Europe with him. Nobody said anything about licensing problems but he was upset because his nurses had problems accessing the health care system in Europe when he ran into medical problems. He should have looked for more savvy nurses, that's all I can say about that. You are working privately for the client, or for the agency; you are not working for any nursing entity in the countries you will be visiting, so your US nursing license is sufficient. But think twice about whether you want to be accessing a health care system in a foreign country should there be problems. The story I was told, made me think about it. I have enough problems accessing our own health care system!

Based on where you travelling to you may just need the appropriate visa. If you going to be actually working in the hospital where the pt is staying well then thats a different issue, you would need take the equavalance exam for that country.
