Can you have RN certification in more than one state?

How does the RN certification work exactly? :o Is it only for the state you took the NCLEX-RN in? Or do you have the option of working in another state whenever you want? Do travel nurses have to take the exam in every state they want to work in?

I'm from California, but I'm planning on getting a nursing degree in Illinois in order to eventually get my RN license. Does anyone have any recommendations about whether I should get it in California or Illinois or any suggested route I should take for this? I am planning on returning back to California permantely after receiving my degree if that helps with your recommendation. Any advice is more than welcome! Thank you!!

Definitely seek licensure in the state where you plan to live and work. When you complete your degree you can apply for licensure by exam with the California Board of Registered Nurses (BRN). You can physically take the NCLEX in any state, it will just be done under the authority of which state board you apply to for initial licensure.
