Can a nurse be an EMT??

Nurses General Nursing

Hello. I graduate from my RN program in a week. I have had no luck landing a nursing job. I was going to start waiting tables in two weeks to cover expenses. My Mom knows a guy who works part time as an EMT. He said I should inquire about working as an EMT until I can land a job as a nurse. I know you have to have EMT training to work as an EMT, however, with my BSN in nursing, is the EMT training still required?? Anyone know??

Much thanks! Epona :D

Yes, once you get your EMT certification. Pre hospital care can be a great job and you will learn a lot. This would be great preparation if you want to go into emergency nursing.

I don't know where you are living but in Texas we are still hiring - new grads included.

I was a volunteer basic EMT for 15 years, and yes it is a whole other animal. I have since let my certification lapse in order to go to school and work. I have considered getting my paramedic after finishing RN school. In this area, it is a 2 year degree like nursing. I would only have to take the paramedic specific classes. So..we will see. That is an option for you - check out the community colleges and see how long it will take to get your EMT-P. But if this area is like yours, they pay a lot less than RNs. You can always join a volunteer service, have them train you for a basic EMT, and see how you like it. Doesn't pay the bills, but might be something you will enjoy.

Good luck finding a job!
