Can NPs working in a speciality be a 103NP?

Published

Hello,

Any specialty practice NPs (cardiology, rheumatology, dermatology, etc) NPs become a 103NP? I've been told NPs can't get their 103NP if they are in a specialty practice. Thanks!

We have been discussing this in our institution (we have a separate APP advisory board independent of physicians). NP's in specialties can apply for 103 status. All this affords us is the ability to practice without a formal standardized procedure document. We already diagnose, treat, and manage in a collaborative setting (with the physician specialist) so this is not going to change because the 103 status still requires the NP to be a part of a team-based setting with physicians. The next level would be the 104 status (which we can apply after 3 years of having 103 status) -- this does elevate the NP to fully independent practice.

I have thought about applying for 103 since NP's with retired certifications such as ACNP-BC, GNP-BC, ANP-BC (which were previously disqualified from applying) are now allowed to apply beginning this year 2025.

Note: if this is not clear, this is only in California as part of the implementation of our state's AB890 law that took effect paving the way for independent NP practice in the state.

it's a love and hate relationship...so many things I can't stand yet so many reasons to stay.

So have you guys been able to get the California 103NP? It doesn't specify specialty or not but I had a friend call the CA BRN and they said no specialty NPs allowed??

One of the NP's in an in-patient specialty is applying...I posted a similar question in another thread and didn't get a response. I'll update once I hear from this NP.

On the application it doesn't ask if it is specialty or not only if you are working within your population scope.  Which is yes so that's what makes me think it is allowed?

read sb1451.  just applied as of march 5 as an adult/psych.NP.  has been on pending status since then.  received the attestation link but did not include my name so Dr. was not able to attest for my hours.  have reached out t them via email and message format they have at the brn website but no replies as of date.
