I draw blood, start IV's, etc. I think that they are wrong...LVN's can't hang blood but we can monitor pt after RN starts it. But check with BON just to be sure.

The Texas BNE has indicated that blood withdrawal by LVNs is governed by facility policy and procedures. Therefore, it depends on whether your workplace permits LVNs to draw blood.

The Commuter is right but I can add that every place I have ever worked in Texas in over 35 years of being a LVN I have been permitted to draw blood.
When in doubt about the scope of practice go directly to the Board of Nursing website.

I'm not sure about the exact laws, but I once had a Medical Assistant "attempt" to draw my blood.
I needed a varicella titer done for my RN program this summer and went to a RediClinic located inside a HEB grocery store in Houston, Texas. I thought the lady who was trying to pull my blood was the nurse practitioner. After she was unsuccessful with her first try, she stated she was a medical assistant and would be right back with the Nurse Practitioner.
I believe a LVN is allowed in their scope of practice to draw blood especially if a medical assistant is allowed to.

Yeah, never worked in a place that an LVN could not draw blood.. They do pretty much the same things as I do, aside from some narcotic med restrictions and hanging blood.

Wow. . .I can't believe an LVN wouldn't be allowed to draw blood anywhere. I'm a lowly Patient Care Tech in Pennsylvania and I'M allowed to draw blood!
