Can an LVN/LPN discontinue an IV?

I was under the impression that it wasn't in the scope of practice in an LPN, but in this Saunders's review book, under IV complications, it says the immediate action is to DC the IV and notify MD. Confused!

In Louisiana there is no laundry list that limits SOP. The policy at the facility you're working in governs your SOP. For NCLEX purposes there are no IV therapy questions bc NCLEX is the same in all 50 states.

Regarding LPN scope of practice regarding discontinuing an IV. In Saunders, it says the LPN can D/C a  IV in emergency situations. Meaning you can STOP it not remove it. It means you can shut it off in an emergency situation. It is different than the removal, that is outside the practice of an LPN in most states, and should be deferred to the RN. That is how it was explained to me from a 30+ year nurse with her masters degree . Hope this helps.
