Hello!
Im wondering if a California LVN can challenge the state phlebotomy exam without attending an expensive phlebotomy course?? I've looked online and didnt find much info on this...has anyone heard of this, or even done it?
As a side note, I work in a clinic and do lots of venipunctures each day and am IV/Blood Draw Certified. I wonder if those would count toward the required amount of blood draws required...

Doesn't the LVN scope of practice in CA permit you do venipuncture? If it does, this obviates the need for a phlebotomy tech certificate.

Im a licensed CPT in California and as far as i know i think it is in an LVN scope of practice. Just double check though. The problem is getting the hand skill down. We needed atleast 50 successful draws from a designated clinical site. They are the ones that sign on the dotted line saying you were successful. Then turn in all your paper work to the state. I think there is a section where the MD has to sign as well stating you did your sticks.
Why would you want a CPT license if your already a LVN?

LVN"s do not have the ability to draw blood without a completing a course in veinipuncture.
