Can a LPN remove a PICC line in Georgia?

Getting a straightforward answer from Boards of Nursing or Nurse Practice Acts is often challenging.

Many Nurse Practice Acts do not include a list of tasks. Instead, they include a decision-making model with considerations such as "Is the procedure within the policies and procedures of your organization?" and "Have you established competence in this activity?"

I would rely on your facility's policies and procedures because they will protect you. The procedure, Removing a Peripherally Inserted Central Line (PICC), should list who can perform the procedure. Any education or training you received should be documented.

To protect yourself, you should definitely not remove a PICC line without training. Some facilities require all tips to be cultured, and some do not. Some require a catheter to be measured, and some do not. You should also be trained in exactly what to document.

I tried calling and emailing the Georgia Board of Nursing. If I hear back from them, I'll update you.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
