Sometimes, they can. It depends upon which state you live in. In NY state, there is no law that states that there has to be a school nurse, but if there is a school nurse, it must be an RN. Often, though, with students that have complex medical needs for a 1 to 1 nurse, an LPN is employed for that.

What state are you in?
Even if your state requires the RN, there are often 1:1 positions or as the second professional in a health office in a large school.

It depends on the State. Some states have certain requirements like being a RN with a baccalaureate degree and having school nurse certification which requires specific classwork beyond the baccalaureate. In some States you cannot be titled as a school nurse unless you are certified. In some States you can work as a nurse in the schools with certain restrictions placed on the level of your professional activities. So it is important to check with your State Board of Education to find out the requirements for practice. It is not wise to rely on your local school district for this information because very often, the school district admininsration either doesn't know all the requirements or knows them and steers you wrong. This can get you in a world of legal trouble if something happens.
