Dear Nurse Beth,

Can an LPN in Florida pronounce a death?

Dear LPN,

Statutes around pronouncing death vary greatly from state to state. Twenty or so states permit RNs to pronounce death, and all under different circumstances. For example, an RN in Texas may pronounce death, but only according to the policies of the facility.

The facility may require special training, limit it to certain nurses (such as house supervisors) and under certain circumstances (ED doctor not available).

In Florida, there is no provision for LPNs to pronounce death, so, no.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
