Can I work three 12hours shifts while going to school for BSN

Published

Just wondering if anyone thinks it's possible to work three 12hour night shifts while going to nursing school. I also have a one year old (that goes to day care) and a boyfriend (his dad) that helps a lot. Any advice or motivation would be appreciated :)

It'll be hard but not impossible. Many if not most nursing students work while in school. If you have a good support system and a lot of help with childcare it's doable. Three 12's sounds like a lot on top of school, but the flip side is you are only working three days instead of four or five. Assuming that one of those three day stretches involves a weekend that's even less time devoted to work on days you have class.

The potential problem with the 12 hour PM to NOC shifts is going to be lack of sleep on school days. It won't be too bad if you have morning classes and can go right from work to school. It also won't be too bad if you have all afternoon classes and can go home and nap before school. The problem will be on days when you have a full day of clinicals following work or if you have a lecture/lab schedule with both AM and PM classes. I won't lie , that'll be tough after working 12 hours.
