My nursing licence is suspended and I am not in agreement with the boards decision. However I passed and have a pharmacy tech certificate. Will that affect my state licence with a background check?

A suspended nursing license can potentially impact your ability to obtain a state license as a pharmacy technician, especially during a background check, depending on the nature of your suspension. Here's how it might affect you:

  • Background check. Most state boards and employers conduct thorough background checks for pharmacy technician licensing. The suspension of your nursing license will likely show up during this process.
  • Reporting requirements. Some states require applicants to disclose any disciplinary actions taken against other professional licenses they hold or have held. Failure to disclose this information can result in denial of the license or revocation if discovered later.
  • State-specific regulations. Regulations vary by state. Some states might have more stringent rules regarding applicants with suspended licenses in other healthcare fields, while others might consider the specifics of the case, such as the reasons for the suspension and your subsequent actions.
  • Board discretion. Licensing boards generally have the discretion to evaluate the circumstances surrounding your nursing license suspension. They may consider factors such as the nature of the infraction, the time elapsed since the suspension, any corrective measures you've taken, and your overall professional conduct.

Steps to Take

  • Review state requirements. Check the specific requirements and regulations for pharmacy technician licensing in your state. This information is often available on the state Board of Pharmacy's website.
  • Prepare documentation. Gather all relevant documents related to your nursing license suspension, including any correspondence with the nursing board and evidence of corrective actions or rehabilitation.
  • Consult legal advice: It might be beneficial to consult with a lawyer specializing in professional licensing to understand your rights and the best way to present your case.
  • Honest disclosure. During the application process, be prepared to disclose your nursing license suspension and provide a clear, honest explanation. Licensing boards often favor transparency.
  • Appeal the nursing license suspension. If you strongly believe the suspension was unjust, continue to pursue an appeal or review process with the nursing board. A successful appeal might positively influence the pharmacy board's decision.

By understanding the potential impact and taking proactive steps, you can better navigate the licensing process for becoming a pharmacy technician despite the suspension of your nursing license.
