Can I get a job as a nurse now that I’ve been baker acted?

Published

Last month I was baker acted as a cop claimed I was suicidal, happily they let me go no problems there, but will I still be able to get employed as a nurse at a hospital or is that forever out of my reach?

I don't think something like this would show up on a background check as you weren't arrested and your personal medical/pysch history is your private business and not public knowledge.  It shouldn't affect you.

Thank you so much for telling me that, I’ve tried to speak with several lawyers but they all contradicted each other: one claims just what you said that it’s private and protected by hippa, the second claims that since a cop was involved it will go down on my criminal history, and the third said I should have no problem getting into nursing school or getting a license but getting employed will be difficult as it’ll appear on my medical history should they want it. I feel so much better now I’ve worked so hard on getting the prerequisites out of the way, and was afraid that everything I did was for nothing.

The answer to your question is state specific. I California there is a question on the application asking you if you have in the last 10 years been hospitalized for a mental illness other than depression or if you have been prescribed certain medications (mostly ones used for psychosis or bi-polar disorder) or treated for substance use disorder. If you answer yes you will have some explaining to do. If there is any chance that criminal charges resulted such as a DUI then yes they will find out on a background check. If there are no criminal charges then your medical history is yours to reveal or not to reveal.

Hope this answer helps.

Thank you even if they want to know I have nothing to hide, the cop that baker acted me jumped to conclusions and claimed I was suicidal just because I said was sick and tired of covid. I was fearful due to the fact that 3 lawyers I spoke with kept contradicting one another, but I’m happy to say I should be in the clear.
