Can I endorse to Florida with a DUI?

I just graduated and I passed the NCLEX, but I'm almost certain that California is going to deny my license due to a DUI because it was just over a year ago. Can I apply for endorsement in Florida (of course after disclosing this information to them) since we have family that live there and I would love to keep my skills active. Do you know the wait time?

Congratulations on passing the NCLEX!

Each state has different regulations and processes for handling applications with past convictions, including DUIs. Here's some guidance on the situation:

Applying for Endorsement in Florida

  • Disclose the DUI. When applying for licensure by endorsement in Florida, you must of course disclose your DUI. The Florida Board of Nursing evaluates applications on a case-by-case basis, considering the severity of the offense and the time elapsed since the conviction.
  • Required documentation. You may need to provide court documents, a personal statement, and possibly letters of recommendation or evidence of rehabilitation.
  • Background check. Florida requires a Level II background check, which includes fingerprinting.

Wait Time for Licensure

  • Application Processing Time: Once all documentation is submitted and the background check is complete, the processing time for licensure by endorsement in Florida typically ranges from 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Additional review. It may take longer if your application requires additional review due to the DUI. The Florida Board of Nursing meets periodically to review applications that require further consideration, so this could add some weeks to the process.

Steps to Take

  • Prepare documentation. Gather all necessary documents related to your DUI conviction and additional supporting materials demonstrating your rehabilitation and good character.
  • Apply. Complete the application for licensure by endorsement in Florida, ensuring you provide accurate and complete information.
  • Follow-Up. Contact the Florida Board of Nursing to ensure your application is progressing and to address any additional requests for information.
