Can I become a nurse? (UK)

Published

Hello

I am thinking about studying adult nursing in the UK next year but I do not know wether I can become a nurse or not.

The problem is that I have schizophrenia and cannot imagine anyone would want to hire me if they knew about it.

My question is: do I have to declare my mental illness or undergo a health check if I am offered a job in the UK? I just don't want to spend 3 years of my life studying to become a nurse and then not being able to get a job anywhere because of my condition.

Hope someone out there can answer my question :)

There is usually a medical when applying for jobs and you have to answer all questions and depending on that they may require further information/documents from your doctor or specialist

You will be required to have a medical to establish your fit to undertaker the duties of any post you apply for, I would say you would be covered by the disability discrimination act with regards to employment and a long term condition.

It would depend on the severity of your symptoms and how well managed your condition is as to if an occupational health assessment would deem you fit for duty.
