Can a general nurse in ghana get a nursing job in the US

Hello, I am currently working as a general staff nurse at the male surgical department and I would love to work in the US.

How do I go about it?

Hey lil12,

To be able to live and work in the US, you'll need an appropriate visa. For nurses, most often this means the EB-3 category of immigrant visas. It's a bit of an expensive process that demands patience while you wait.

Talking of waiting, it's (nearly) impossible to find an employer that will hold a position for you while you go through the immigration process (minimum of 1-2 years). So you'll be better off with a US-based recruitment company to petition and sponsor this visa on your behalf. Trust me, it'll make everything so much easier and you won't spend all your money.

In order to eligible for this visa and to practice nursing in the US, you'll need to have your credentials evaluated and license validated (most often by the CGFNS), take the IELTS or TOEFL and pass the national licensure examination (NCLEX-RN).

So do research on

- Nursing board requirements for international nurses (every state is different)

- Work/immigrant visas

- Recruitment companies (I recommend Avant Healthcare Professionals)

- Credential evaluation and license validation requirements from the CGFNS website

- IELTS/TOEFL requirement

- What the NCLEX is and how to pass it
