even though i don't know it for sure, i feel it will be awfully hard. my understanding on aana requirement is that a person must graduate from one of those 94 accredited programs to qualify for certification exam. a foreigner can definitely go to apply for a us crna program as i noticed a lot of crna program web sites claim they can accept international applicants. a valid us rn license is normally a prerequisite and i don't know how people can get around with that. if your friend is seriously consider that, you may consult with an immigration lawyer specialized in foreign nurses.

I see. that one might be insurmountable, right there, barring coming here and getting into a school.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question.
But basically I would like to ask if anybody knows if there are any other countries out there where US trained CRNA's can work. There does not seem to be a lot of information out there and maybe somebody knows a good link or has a general idea of where to look.
Thanks.....

Thanks Deepz
I have been to this website before and really couldn't find too much. It seems like some of the links were improved and there is actually some good information now. I think it will still take quite some work to figure out what the scope of practice is in different countries. I was hoping for something a little more plain vanilla but this is definitively a good start.

i have a friend who is an anesthesiologist (MD) pediatric cardio by subspec from the philippines. she is also an RN trained as anesthetist in the Phil Heart Center. her pre medicine is nursing. she took NCLX here in CA and passed. she pursued CRNA and had to go through the same program for CRNA.

I am a foreign nurse graduate and has worked here in the US for the last ten years. Currently, I am in a CRNA program here in TX. My understanding is that to be able to practice as a CRNA here in the US, one must be a registered nurse in any of the 50 states and a graduate of any of the 94 CRNA programs accredited by COA-AANA. I do not know if your friend is a US licensed RN and is also practicing in Sweden, but if not, i would suggest that your friend might want to look at taking the CGFNS (Commission of Graduates of Foreing Nursing Schools....see website) examination first and then get into any of the CRNA programs. The new guidelines, if I remember it correctly, require that to be able to practice as an advance nurse practicioner, you must have a graduate degree which most of the CRNA programs will confer. In applying to any of the programs, be cognizant that not all CRNA programs accept foreign graduate nurses. And most of them require a minimum of at least a year of ICU experience preferrably in any US hospital. Best Regards and Good Luck to your friend.

Hi,
I am in the same position as your friend in Sweden but I might have come a little bit further I just received my licens to work as a R.N.
I am from Sweden too but live in the USA since November 2003.
You have to have a license as a R.N in one of the 50 states and to get that is a little time consuming. In some states you need the CGFNS and NCLEX and also a Visa Screen ( Visa Screen is something every health care personal needs it is exactly the same as the CGFNS is checking up on you, what school, your swedish license etc). Some of the states is getting away from the CGFNS but check that up if you really are plannig to come over.
To know more how to check the possibility to work as a Nurse Anesthetist go to http://www.AANA.com site and click on IFNA and after that you click on the titel "Practice as a Nurse ANesthetist in the U.S.´
I think that will answer a lot of your questions........
Good Luck
