Hi,
I got my CNA during my pre-reqs. I called 2 local hospitals and asked for the hiring criteria for CNA's (or PCA's). Both hospitals said that you had to have either your state issued CNA or have completed a semester of clinicals. To be honest, I got the impression they preferred the clinical completion over the state CNA. If you have a hospital/facility that you know you're interested in, call them and ask what their requirements are. The hospital I work at doesn't require the CNA cert. if you have your clinicals done. There is a quick course that you go thru on-site at the hospital prior to hiring (vitals, accuchecks, etc.). Once you pass, they then hire you. Good luck.
Great thanks for your input everyone. I wasn't sure...now I know, yaay! :) So I guess i'll wait until I finish my first semester of clinicals instead of spending $ on the CNA course (but if some workplaces i'm interested in only hire as CNA after a year of clinicals versus 1 semester, then I might consider taking a CNA course). Thanks again:loveya:

Hi everyone,
I'm currently a pre-clinical student at BMCC. I read somewhere in an old thread on this site that after 1st semester of clinicals, you can be eligible to become a CNA? Is that true in NY state? I was considering taking a CNA course this fall to get more related work experience, but don't want to spend such $ on a course if i'll be done with Nur 112 (Fundamentals of Nursing) Spring 2010...and if somehow i'd be eligible to sit for a CNA exam? Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks so much for any help!
