Can anyone offer reassurance? I passed out while working in ER this week!

Oh, the humilation of it all....I am an ER tech, volunteer EMT and soon-to-be paramedic student. I have been in the health care field for over 10 years and have never once passed out during a procedure. Until now:uhoh21:...earlier this week I was observing a good arterial lac and everything was going fine. Next thing I knew, the staff was yelling my name, asking if I was ok. I remember feeling sooo comfortable-not hurt at all. They told me I'd passed out and hit the floor-hard!! I didn't even remember it...They checked my CBG: 90 mg/dl, and transfered me to a bed and put me in trendeleburg position-my BP was 79/40! I gradually improved my bp and they kept checking orthostatics. Neuro exam performed by the doc was negative. I am just left with some bad bruising and an even more bruised ego!! My two good friends on that evening said this is normal, that I probably locked my knees or was simply hypotensive. A couple others (who weren't so kind), kept taunting me saying "Are you sure you want be a Paramedic?" Followed by their laughter. This has NEVER happened to me, and I'm not sure why it did. I'm a healthy 31 y/o woman and have seen much more intense truama and drama from the level I ER where I'm from. Anyone have any good tips, or ideas to make me feel better about this and less ashamed?

And yes, I am planning to be a Paramedic:lol2:

i agree with some of the others. everyone has something that gets to them

i was working with a nurse who i know did dressing changes, cleaned up blood and poop never saw him flinch

one time we were working with a patient with some pulmonary problems and he was coughing a lot of thick tenacious gunk..partner went running out of the room trailing vomit

both patient and nurse were embarrassed

get a health eval and go on to be a great paramedic

as a student i had an opportunity to watch a bone marrow aspiration. Yay! The nurse asked if I get queasy. "No not yet." Though it had so far been a worry for me that the possibility is out there. "Well if you feel it just quietly step out of the room." NO PROB. I thought. I just kept leaning against the wall as the room got stifling, smaller and my legs got weak. The Doc was just drilling into this guys hip who was I think on his side talking to the Doc. I kept thinking "Buddy, Dont YOU FEEL THAT!?" Then I started thinking, why do I feel weird. I am not queasy.lam not queasy. The more I said that to myself the worse itl got. It wasnt even gross or real bloody. But when they got the sample and the Med Asst put it in a sample jar with fluid and held it up to me to see I must have gone white cuz she smiled. I made it through without passing out or anything but I made it to the BR quick drank water out of the tap and threw it on my face. The RN saw me later and just laughed. A classmate I found out went there the next day and had THE EXACT same thing happen to her!!!! The RN musthave seen it alot. WOW was I surprised.

I guess my point was the more I told myself I wasnt queasy the more I talked myself into being just that. I set myself up for near fainting, with a little suggestion of the possibility from the RN. Now I am the RN and nothing surprises me anymore. Just share those experiences with the new nurses. Just got done precepting one, had told her about a pt who when I put in his cath urine came spewing out around the tube out through the meatus. She couldn't believe it but believe it or not we cathed a male the next day and lobehold urine fountain. The look on her face was priceless. Oh my lord that is wild. "I guess I better bring and leave extra scrubs just in case for the future." We had ducked so we were ok but the possibility really opened her eyes.
