Can anyone answer this for me?

I just recently found out I'm pregnant and I want to use a nurse midwife to help with my pregnancy and deliver my baby. I've heard that they won't take on high risk pregnancies and since I'm 40, I guess I fall into that category even though I'm a healthy woman. My experience with both a CNMW and OB have been good, but so much better with a nurse midwife and since i'm a nurse....

I was just wondering if this is all true and they won't take on higher risk pregnancies and I will have to got to an OBGyn? Or, if they weigh in all factors with each individual and their pregnancy?

Thanks a bunch:)

I wouldn't assume you'll be risked out for your age.

Call a few offices and ask.

If you live in an area close to state lines, check both states. I'm in Illinois/Iowa, and there are some big differences in the OB's role depending on which state you give birth in.

Also, some offices have OBs and CNMs in the same group- if that's the case, you might be able to have the CNM unless you risk out for some reason- at least then, you know the OB you would go to.

Lastly, in my opinion, if you have free standing birth centers in your area, you might have the most luck with them.

Don't give up- just start making phone calls.

CONGRATULATIONS by the way :)

Cookderosa is right. Being 40 does not put you out of the scope of CNM management.

If you are 40 and healthy, I don't know of a CNM alive that wouldn't babycatch for you!

I like that word, "babycatch":) Thank you all, I'm going to see a midwife next week!! Soo excited:)

Good luck to you, CityKat! I like 'babycatch' too, because a woman 'delivers' her own baby. The birth attendant's job is to stand there and catch! :)
