Has anyone done camp nursing in the summer? I'd love to hear about it.
How long of a stretch does it usually last?
How's the pay?
Can your kids attend while you are there? Is there a discount if they do?
I am the OP and while I don't do any hiring, I can tell you what I did :)
I registered on Camp Nurse Jobs, Camp Jobs across the USA and Canada. Jobs for camp staff. and posted a profile and was contacted by a bunch of camps. I chose the one that I liked the most and my kids and I had an incredible summer. If you decide to look into it, I would recommend asking the following from any camp you interview with:
How many nurses do you have on staff?
What is the schedule like- on/off time? on call overnight?
What is the pay? Can I bring my kids (if applicable)?
Is there a doctor on site?
If not, how close is the nearest doctor? Does one round at the camp?
How close is the nearest emergency room?
What is the EMS response time?
What is the camper population like? i.e.- is it a special needs camp? Are there many diabetics? etc
How large is the health center? Are there beds for overnight stays?
What is the typical schedule? Are there assigned times that campers can come in for non-emergencies or is it an open door policy?
Will I be reimbursed for transferring my license to your state (if you need to)?
What are my accommodations like? Is there AC? Wifi?
Google camp widjiwagan, Nashville TN. It is a great camp. Next year will be my 3rd summer! If you email the resident camp director, Matt Crawforth, he can put you in contact with me. He does all the hiring, but would prob have you communicate with me about all the specifics of the health lodge! Good luck!! Ginger Gaylord

I am having a huge smile on my face as in college I worked as a counselor at a Girl Scout resident camp also called Camp Widjiwagan :) It was in Central Illinois and I would never have dreamed there was more than one place with that name!
Thank you for the quick replies! I am looking to work 2-3 weeks and would like to bring my 3 girls and still get paid...I feel like this may be a longshot but I would need to make money and not do a barter. Our school returns back to session beginning of August and from what I have found so far, most camps go well into August. Anyways, I would love to hear what options are out there that work with my needs :)
I would definitely speak with Matt then. I know he is out of town for a few weeks, but may be checking his email periodically. I'm sure he will be looking for someone to work the whole summer as well as someone to fill in for me for 2 weeks that I will not be able to do next summer. It is a paid position, but I do not have camp age children so I am unable to speak to working and having your children at camp, though I know it has been done at Widji. Have you ever done camp nursing?

I am doing it mainly so that my kids will have the sleep over camp experience. I am really feeling good about the camp I have signed with. Many long term employees, family run, ACA approved. If we all like it, I hope to do it for several years!
