Hi all,
I have posted a few times about my worries on getting into a nursing program and just wanted to share that I got accepted to Watts School of Nursing in Durham. I am so excited and I was wondering if any Watts students (or from other programs) had any advice on how they have gone about financing their education. I never had to deal with financial aid when I got my undergrad a few years ago and Watts is pretty pricey, (about $30,000). I plan to do the tuition reimbursement program with Duke when I graduate but I'm worried about what to do right now. Any advice on financial aid or private loan experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!:heartbeat
Dreamon, I studied the allied health book.....just remember there is no algebra on the test study the reading and be very very fast and answer all the questions. If you need any more information on the test just let me know.I just took it in nov.
I'm getting ready to take the entrance exam. What exactly is on the math and non verbal sections.
The test consists of basic math questions, they are pretty simple and the book that you study with (allied health entrance exams) does a good job of preparing you for the type of questions. The verbal is all anatonyms and what I did was made flash cards for all of the words that i didn't now in the book and memorized the meaning and let me tell you it worked like a charm!!! I only missed about two of the antonym questions. I had to reteach myself basic math, since I was always bad at it and never had much when I was working on my BA. Know how to multiply, add, subtract and divide your fractions. Know how to go from fractions to percent and vice versa. The real kicker is TIME. I can't tell you how frustrating it is with the time. The first part (academic aptitude) is like 90 questions and you have like 20 or 25 minutes to answer them and it's really nerve racking. I had to take it twice and there were a lot of people retesting. Work as fast as you can, I went in the second time I took it and just flew through it and I went from 33percentile the first time to 95 percentile. Don't feel bad it if you have to restest. You can't really prepare for just how hard it is with the time limits. I would answer all of the questions even if you have to make a good guess even if they say you aren't expected to be able to answer all of the questions. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Does the $30,000 include the Mt. Olive classes or just Watts? I see that there is an information session next month. I will certainly be there.
Dreamon, the fees from Mt. Olive and Watts are different and separate, though you have to be paid up by the end of a semester to proceed to the next. All the financial aid is processed through Mt. Olive.
When you start, you lock in your rate for Watts (don't quote me but I think it's currently around $5,500/semester).
Mt. Olive charges by the credit hour. I'm taking 6 courses for 19 hours and it's going to be $7k.
That's how the ~$30k breaks down.
Do you know if the semester for Mt. Olive is included in the tuition that gets paid back to you if you sign the contract to work for Duke or are the Watts semesters only reimbursed?
I should be taking 19 credit hours for this first semester with Mt. Olive and I though it was going to be around $6300, the financial aid person told me it was $330 per credit hour. Are you taking online courses? Those may cost more I guess. I might have to take some of them online too since I live in Raleigh and will be commuting.
The tuition is $335/CH.
Then you have to add in $130 "technology fee" plus $350 for books, that brings it to $7k.
All the classes I needed were part of the core requirements; which are all held on-site at WSON. I think you only go to MO-RTP or online for classes you take to fulfill the 18 hour minimum because you transferred in "too many" of the core subjects.
The Duke reimbursement program is only for the WSON portion. But that's still a great deal. You get ~75-80% of your costs back and put Duke on your CV.
All the pre-req's are "Through" Mt. Olive.
But the core set that we are enrolled in are held onsite at WSON.
If you take any classes outside that core set (usually because you've completed most of them but you still need to meet that 18 hour minimum at Mt. Olive) then those are usually at the MO campus or online.
Thanks again to everyone contributing information to this thread- you are all so great!
My question is- 1. Usually pre-reqs are used to narrow down applicants into a program. Since the pre classes are taken at Mt Olive, the only entrance requirements are the NET test, essay and recommendations?
2. What kind of GPA do you need to have to stay in the program? If you fail a class what happens then?
3. From what I understand- there is NO credit given for classes already taken at another school. If someone already took A&P- they'd have to take it over again?

Dreamon, the testing has already past so the next will be in Jan. you can call to see what days. I know its once a month. About the price alltogether i really dont know I havent asked yet. You would think that it would be a together deal but maybe not. Your fund will work because it has to be paid before the end of the sem. So its kinda like payments you should be alright with your college fund.good luck I pray that you pass.
