Calling in sick before the holidays

all of us had full loads yesterday. i was told to delegate some of mine because i had to drive a ways to teach a family how to inject interferon, so i would limit the overtime. i did. a while later we get a message that one of the lvns called in sick. she was the one i delegated my pts to. great.

boss called her and informed her that by calling in sick the day before a holiday, she will not the holiday pay.

*gasp*

all of a sudden she's feeling better!!!!

*addendum* this post is not about the legitimately ill. when a reminder about the policy suddenly produces a healing, the "illness" is obviously not legit. that's what this is about.

Working holidays is done on a volunteer basis; on each holiday there is one RN and one LVN working the holiday rate. The rest of us get paid the regular holiday pay. In order to get that holiday pay, however, you cannot call in sick the day before. There are people who abused the privilege, not just in this job but also at my husband's grocery store job........there are people who habitually call in the day before a holiday or the day before their vacation/weekend starts. It's those people who ruin it for the rest of us. This LVN does have a habit of calling in at questionable times, like this time. If it was one of the other LVNs no one would have batted an eye. She wouldn't have gotten the pay but no one would have questioned whether or not she was really sick.

Must be nice to get holiday pay. Where I am, if you work in a clinic, you have to use your PTO as holiday pay. If you work the floor, there is no holiday pay...no time and a half. You get your regular pay and shut up and work.
