Calling all Paducah, KY Nurses!

U.S.A. Kentucky

Published

I am a pre-nursing student at WKCTCS (Paducah) and noticed the KY forum seems overrun with people in Lexington-Louisville area. If you are a current or former student at the college or just a Paducah nurse in general give a shout out. We newbs need some good resources and some insider info on the local nursing scene.

I am a 32 year old male starting my nursing classes either spring or fall 2010 (may need the prereqs from fall to bankrupt a 10-year old B.A. GPA to get accepted). I am interested in ICU at either local hospital and eventually getting my CRNA.

I hope so. Hey has anyone ever heard of that trick where sometimes thay change your major on your transcripts before the letters are sent out? Like it says "nursing pending" now but some people say that before they got their letter their major changed to nursing? Any truth to that that you guys know of?

I don't know, but I will definately be looking at my major, lol.

I called WIA and I think we will barely slide by on income.....dh just got a 2 hr raise. Think I will tell them to take it back, lol.

i checked mine the other day, it just says allied health. i think they changed it to that after you attend the nursing conference. would be nice to see RN Nursing there... not sure if it changes to anything other than allied health though.

i got WIA a few years back to pay for a CDL Truck driving program. at the time they just looked at your last 3 months income, so as soon as you get your acceptance letter apply that way your husbands raise won't affect you as much. when i got it i was recently unemployed from a high paying job and waited a month for that old income to dissappear before i applied. the people at the unemployment office helped me a lot.

Mine says "nursing pending pending" Not sure why there's 2 pendings on there? But I figure if they meet the 2nd week in July maybe it'll pop up then? I mean, I don't think it'll change to long before the letters get mailed.

Anyways I haven't contacted WIA yet but I'm planning on it if I get accepted.

Keith, do you happen to remember what formula they used to figure your income? When I applied for Audobon it seems like they multiplied my husbands weekly income by like 4.?? and divided by something else....something about there being 4.? pay periods in each month....I don't know it was weird.

if i remember correctly they took my pay stubs for the previous 3 months and they had income guidelines for the 3 month period. they may have averaged it or something, but not sure... if they take one paycheck and multiply by 52 and divide by 12 then be sure to not have any overtime.

I have never applied for Auborn assistance. Can I still apply for WIA? Are the 2 programs related?

WIA and child care assistance (audobon) are seperate. Here in Paducah, WIA is at the unemployment office on 6th street and child care assitance is at the HIPP building on Jackson St.

If you don't qualify for childcare assistance, contact WKCTC person and they can try and work with you. I believe you had to have a letter stating you were denied.

Here is the link from WKCTC site about childcare assistance. There is a link for the checklist and application.

Here is the important thing. Get WIA first. Once you are approved, you are approved until you graduate from the program. Let's say your family income is low enough and you qualifiy and you are approved and then a week later you hit the lottery, WIA still pays. You can work if you have to after WIA is approved. I say this because when I checked into audobon I had to work 20 hours plus go to school in order to obtain assistance. Then through the college you can work at the bookstore or library.

I chose to pay out of pocket, which I will be using my pell grant money for, to pay for my children's daycare while I am in class.

Hope this helps.

Quick question- what are the guidlines with stethoscopes? I have to have one for my job and the other day it grew legs and walked away. In the interest of saving money I'd like to get one that I can also use at clinicals. Are there any kinds/colors that are prohibited, or can you get whatever you want? Thanks!

I missed a call from the nursing dept at the school today, didnt get it till after they left for the day! I'm gonna go nuts waiting to talk to them tomorrow, and I have to work all night too so plenty of time to wonder what it is about!
