California to Texas - Transfer

Published

Hello!

Has anyone from CA moved to Texas for schooling, specifically BSN programs? I’m currently looking at some BSN programs (like TWU) in Texas because CA is sooo competitive.

Hey! I am not from Cali but I did my first two years at a community college and want to transfer to a university for my BSN. The Texas schools are also highly competitive and most schools (including TWU) give large advantages to students who completed a certain number of credit hours at their institution. Transfer students to TWU would generally need around a 4.0 GPA and a high TEAS score. However, if you attend TWU and complete your prereqs there (such as anatomy 1/2, nutrition, psych, etc.) you'll have a higher chance!

Hi! Are you from Texas? I was wondering if Texas universities only look at science GPA and not overall, because it seems that TWU does that?

1.  Many Nursing schools in Texas are quite competitive too!  However, the state has set up grants to pump money to nursing schools that increase enrollment.  If you can find one of those schools, it might be easier to get in!

2. You may want to meet the requirement to be classified as a TEXAS RESIDENT, if you intend to attend a state funded school. “Out of state” tuition is much more expensive.

Good Luck!

Hey! I am from TX. We have quite a few BSN programs. Most schools look at your overall GPA but focus mostly on your science GPA. TWU focuses mostly on your science GPA but also factors in other basic prereqs on a smaller scale I believe. Their program is based on a point system

Here is a spreadsheet (possibly outdated) that you can use to estimate your admission points! https://twu.edu/media/documents/nursing/GPA-WS-2018.xlsx

Other schools do it differently, for example UTA. UTA is also based on a point system and looks at your nursing GPA + your overall GPA.

Every university is different. Sorry if this was confusing, let me know if you need me to clarify anything! I am also a pre-nursing student myself so my information is all second hand

Specializes in Student, Grad: ‘21.

I lived in both states and actually got accepted in California on my first go. I’m currently doing an ADN program at a community college (that isn’t lottery based), but what I love is that they offer concurrent BSN enrollment with partner universities (some CSUs and some online). So far my four semester program has only cost $3,000 and my BSN will be another $8,000. No complaints here!
