Never been there, but I hear that it is just about #1 in hurting for nurses. Plus they just got a maximum patient load bill passed.

California is a great state for nurses to work. The need is great, so if you have experience, you should be able to write your own ticket. (Even if you are a NG, they will want you) Some hospitals have sign-on bonuses up to $15K and many also add relocation.

Northern CA hospitals are usually union, so expect to pay dues.

CA labor laws requires you to get 1 meal period on 8-hour shifts and 2 meal periods on 12-hr shifts (most of the hospitals have 12-hour shifts...and you can waive your 2nd meal if you want). Plus for every 4-hrs worked a 10-min break is required. And, we also have the new, and first, nurse patient ratio in the country.

Salaries are high, but so are living expenses (esp. in San Jose area).

I did a travel assignment in Redding, CA. Talk about CUSHY! I loved it and wish I could move there permanently. I might like being a nurse again...
