Hello all nurses and future nurses!
We are students from CSUSM researching current California State laws on nurse to patient ratios. We have created this educational handout on the importance of safe nurse to patient ratios within a medical surgical environment. While California has current ratio laws in place, we feel there is still room for improvement that can affect nurse and patient safety. We would appreciate your thoughts and feedback.
Thank you for supporting our education.

Is it safe to assume there are screenshots from a word processing program in the PDF? Because there are misspelling red lines under many names. You'll want to redo that to get rid of the lines for a more professional look.
Yes! Thank you for your feedback, we will fix that.

Excellent points are made throughout your educational handout. Not many “non nurse” personnel will understand that burnout is a real part of our job and a reality of our lives as nurses. It is a sad fact to admit that I find myself more irritable and fatigued when I have 5 patients on my medical surgical floor. What you all are advocating for I stand by. A job well done!

Hi there! New grad here and I just started working on my own after two months of training in med surg. There are days when I come home and cry, because I feel so overwhelmed. Some days with 5 patients it’s fine especially if they’re just waiting to get tests done and are NPO but sometimes the patients are so acute that there’s no way I could safely do my job. Just trying to remember things for each patients I get jumbled up. Nice handout!

Great points made here! I have been working med/surg for my entire nursing career, where the patient to nurse ratio is 5:1. On days where I get lucky and have only four patients, I definitely feel less stressed and rushed throughout the day. I also feel that I have more time to spend with my patients and provide them with better care. I hope this 4:1 ratio becomes a reality soon!
