California nursing question

Does getting into nursing school in California involve a "lottery" system or is it based on grades, pre req's etc? I am an lpn and considering moving there and eventually finishing my RN.

The JCs require all the same pre-reqs throughout California; it was not always this way though, it was hard for people to apply to several schools at once because many had different requirements. About five or six years ago they changed it so they were all the same. You must have at least a 2.5 apply. After you apply you are put into a computer lotto system. If you go for your RN at a State University program you get chosen by merit; you have to have pretty darn good grades.

I am living here in Idaho, have a gpa of 3.94 and have a current Idaho lpn license. Are there many jobs for an lpn in Ca? Im not above nursing homes either.

Most jobs for LVNs (LPN in other states) are in nursing homes. Not many hospitals hire LVNs anymore. Not to say none do. I work in L&D and work with an LVN. She has been there for about six years though. I can not remember the last time I saw a job offering for an LVN in a hospital around here. After the nursing ratios were changed many hospitals got rid of a huge portion of their CNAs, like one for an entire floor. LVNs followed a year or two later.

Not all schools in california do a lottery. Some are just based on grade point average it all depends. But to bridge to a RN from LVN (LPN) is alot easier to get into the programs once you have your prereqs done and a good gpa. The waiting list is for people who are trying to go straight to RN.

The community college I go to does it on a first come, first serve basis. So for example, when you finish your pre-reqs and apply, your name will be added to the bottom. Anyone who finishes their pre-reqs and applies after you will be put under you. Then it just goes down the list. Each semester accepts about 80 students, but I heard it's going to be way less next semester because of budget cuts, probably around 50 or 60.
