California Lvn going out of state for RN?

Updated:   Published

Hello,

so I'm in a bit of a bind. Been trying for years to get into a nursing program (lvn-RN or just RN) and haven't had any luck.

My question is, if I went out of state for my lvn-RN bridge program say, for example through Hutchinson university, and took my NCLEX out of state, could I then apply for reciprocity or take another NCLEX in California to get licensure here?

I know California doesn't allow online schools but I'm just wondering if I got my license out of state if that would be a way around that. Thank you for any help.

I know several people doing this route. It is so hard here in California. From what I know, California isn't a state that participates in reciprocity. You would just take your NCLEX out of state then apply in California for licensure. That is from my understanding from asking the friends who are doing it.

Only the California BRN can answer this and tell you if they will accept your education for either licensure by exam licensure by endorsement. But they will always evaluate the source of your RN, not just the fact that you were licensed as an RN in another state.

Why is California making this so hard?

Hi there,

Though I don't live in Ca, I graduated from the LPN to RN bridge program through Hutchinson Comm College. There were 2 students that were from Ca in my class. They both took the NCLEX for the Kansas BON, then applied for the Ca license. Neither of them had any problem doing this. They didn't have to test again to get the Ca license. And your transcript from Hutchinson doesn't say you took the classes online.

As far as Hutch being online, it's only the course work that's online. Clinicals are done in person in Kansas and some may be able to be arranged in your home state (but that it difficult).
