Calculation question

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hello. I have a problem similar to this. I have changed the values. How do I go about approaching this calculation? Your help is appreciated.

A client who weighs 98 lb is to receive Intropin at the rate of 6 mcg/kg/min. A nurse mixes 400 mg of Intropin in 500 mL of intravenous solution. how many milliliters per hour should the nurse set the infusion pump to deliver?

Thank you.

98 lbs =45kg (rounded)

weight in Kg X (mcg/Kg/min) X 60 min = 45 X 6 X 60 = 20.25(or 20ml/hr)

conc of IV in mcg 800mcg/ml

If you work in most facilities you should know this. To double check yourself call your hospital Pharmacist.:twocents:

I am a BSN new nurse... passed all of my medication calc questions in nursing school.. hence I was able to graduate. Passed NCLEX-RN on the 1st try. Administered medication without calc errors. This is the 1st time I have seen a question like this. Was never given this school. I was able to answer (correctly) all of the other questions on a practice sheet without a problem.
