Will calcium being high in your bloodwork make you feel nautious? I don't understand why it would be high - i do not drink milk. The doctor said if it stayed high that they would do another test - something to do with thyroid , i guess?!! Does anyone know what test he is talking about?

There are a few conditions that can cause elevated calcium levels, regardless of your calcium intake. Most often this is caused by stored calcium being released, rather than because dietary intake is excessive.

I can't give you a biochemical reason why nausea s associated with hypercalcaemia, but in my experience nausea is an early warning sign from your body that there's something wrong - it's often what sends people to the doctor in the first place.

Good luck :)

he's probably talking about doing parathryoid tests which if not working, can give you hypercalcemia....hope you're feeling better.

Doesn't this have to do with body weight (like losing weight)?

What are some other conditions assoc. with high calcium levels?

if you have an overactive THYROID gland, then yes, you can lose weight.

but in terms of calcium levels, there are 4 tiny structures attached to your thyroid gland, which are your parathryoids.

the parathryoid glands are responsible for maintaining normal levels of calcium, which ensures normal neuromuscular functioning and a couple of other functions that i have forgotten.

but the main function of the parathyroid is to regulate calcium levels in your blood.

what other tests will be high if it is parathyroid? would hematocrit, ALT (SGPT), or protein be high too?

if you had hyperthyroid (overactive thyroid gland) then there is a myriad of problems associated with this; weight loss being one of them because of an overactive metabolic state.

please stephera, do not wish hyperthyroid on yourself for the sake of losing wt. this condition can wreak havoc on your heart and send you into arrest if left untreated.

when you have an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroid) then you are prone to gain wt.

parathyroid, interestingly enough, has absolutely nothing to do with the function(s) of the thyroid gland itself.

but i would make sure that you have a variety of labs done to r/o any pathology....nausea is usually indicative of something gone awry.

good luck sweetie.

I know , I am not wishing it!! I had blood work done. My protein, calcium,ALT,and hematocrit were a small bit high. I had my kidneys checked out and they are fine. I was really surprised because I have been a bad diabetic since I was 7. 22 years. It hasn't been controlled well.... I have been feeling out of energy, can't sleep well, and nausea, headache, racing heart. So are these other lab levels have something to do with hyperthyroid? Thanks for all your information. I am making another appointment on Monday because something has got to be wrong or I wouldn't feel this way. Thanks:)

Up to 1% of the population of high blood calcium, most with no symptoms. The most common cause of elevated serum calcium is primary hyperparathyroidism. Other conditions include: high vitamin D levels, renal failure, adrenal gland disease, thiazide (diuretic) use, hyperthyroidism, and some kinds of tumours.

I don't know what your constellation of changes indicate, but if they're all only slightly higher than normal I wouldn't be too concerned (says me, the queen of hypochondria!).

Good luck :)
